Tomorrow, April 20th (4/20) is a big day for cannabis enthusiasts around the world and especially in Canada where cannabis has been legal now since 2018.
April 20th (the 4th month and the 20th day) has come to be known as 420, and a day to celebrate everything cannabis. 420 events are held across Canada and you can see our listings below of some of the more popular ones taking place.
420 has become a recognizable symbol for the cannabis community. The origins of this term are shrouded in mystery, and there are several theories as to where it came from.
The most popular theory about the origin of 420 is that it was the police code for a marijuana arrest. However, this theory has been debunked as there is no police code 420 related to cannabis. Another theory is that it was the number of chemical compounds in marijuana, but this theory has also been disproven.
The true origin of 420 can be traced back to a group of high school students in San Rafael, California, in the early 1970s. The group of friends, known as the Waldos, would meet after school at 4:20 p.m. to smoke marijuana. They used the term 420 as a code word to refer to smoking weed without drawing attention to themselves.
The Waldos were also friends with members of the Grateful Dead, and they would use the term 420 around the band. The Grateful Dead embraced the term and began using it in their concert flyers and on backstage passes. This helped to popularize the term among their fans and spread it throughout the cannabis community.
Over time, 420 became a cultural phenomenon and a symbol for the cannabis community. April 20th, or 4/20, has become a holiday for cannabis enthusiasts to celebrate and smoke marijuana. On this day, people gather in parks and other public places to smoke together and show their support for cannabis legalization.
In recent years, 420 has taken on a new significance as more states in the U.S. and countries around the world have legalized cannabis for medical or recreational use. The term has become a symbol for the fight for cannabis legalization and a reminder of the progress that has been made.
