A new study of 1387 people finds that prescribed and supervised medical cannabis led to postitive self-reported results for patients dealing with anxiety and sleep-related issues.
The researchers, published in the scientific journal Neuropsychopharmacology Reports, conclude that:
“There was an associated improvement in self-reported anxiety, sleep quality, and HRQoL [health-related quality of life] in patients treated with the CBMPs [cannabis-based medicinal products]. Those prescribed treatment formulations including dried flower were most likely to show a clinical improvement.”
Cannabis-Based Medical Products
CBMPs for short are medicinal products derived from the cannabis plant, and they contain various compounds that interact with our body’s endocannabinoid system. The most well-known of these compounds are tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD), each with its unique properties.
Cannabis-based medical products come in various forms: oils and other edibles, topical creams, vape cartridges and of course regular cannabis flower. Each of these formulations can have different effects on our health.
This study aimed at exploring how Cannabis-based medical products influence health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and other aspects of patients’ well-being. The study focused on a group of patients who received an either oil-based form or flower form or a combination of both.
The findings were quite encouraging. Patients experienced improvements in self-reported anxiety, sleep quality, and overall HRQoL over the course of the study, which spanned 1, 3, 6, and 12 months. These improvements were especially notable among patients who received dried flower preparations.
Perhaps even more striking was the reduction in opioid medication use among some patients. Over the course of the study, opioid prescriptions decreased, hinting at the potential of Cannabis-based medical products to help reduce the reliance on these strong pain medications.
Importantly, the study also explored the safety of Cannabis-based medical products. Most reported adverse events were mild to moderate, aligning with previous assessments of Cannabis-based medical product safety. Interestingly, but not very suprising, those who were already familiar with cannabis (current or previous users) had fewer adverse events, highlighting the potential importance of prior experience.
While these findings are undoubtedly promising, it’s essential to remember that this study had its limitations. As an observational study, it couldn’t definitively prove that Cannabis-based medical products were solely responsible for the observed effects. Many factors could have contributed, and more research is needed to fully understand the complexities.
